Hi Aussie,

Lae war cemetary has some personal significance for my husband too. His father, also Bob Clarke, was in the ninth division, 2nd fifteenth, and fought in New guinea after returning from the middle east. Before landing at Red Beach north of Lae he was married in Brisbane, and his best man was killed beside him crossing the Busu River. Another mate was also killed in the fighting and both are buried in the Lae Cemtary. Bob's dad went onto Finschafen (spelling doesn't look right here - could somebody let me know), then Sio, south of Madang, where he was wounded and sent back to Australia. Here are some more photos of the war cemetary, also taken in 1965.

Bob on war cemetary steps - (he tells me anyone in Lae from the time he was there knew him as Ringo, by the way).

More Lae photos from 1964/65. Bob also has slides of Bulolo and Wau, not to mention Goroka, Mt Hagen and other areas of the highlands, and a few taken around Madang and from the air appraching Wewak (when he ran out of film:-) When I get around to scanning them I'll try to find somewhere appropriate to post them - maybe in the Journey to Paradise Forum or Your Story and Experiences. Some of his Mt Hagen ones ar more than just scenery - they show a way of life with the Commonwealth boys doing field banking in highland villages via landrover. However, there is plenty of beautiful scenery too.

This one shows the road into Lae airstrip (as was)
