Hi Kerry and Paula,
Just had another look at Google Earth tonight and there was Igam Barracks. You can easily pick out the houses. Sadly over 30 years looks like a bit run down (rust on some roofs) and much jungle as been cleared.
Regards
San Lauw

I think I remember you Kerry but we were there for such a short time. We lived opposite the Ryan's(Provo) and Melling's(Guy) and Macloud Lee's(Drum Major).
Heres a shot of the pool when it first opened, thats the OR's mess and hall/cinema in the backgound I think.

Hi Peter, your name is so familiar to me as are all the names that you mentioned especially the Melling's as Guy's sister Sharon and I were good friends. Yes that is the theatre in the background. Saw man's first step on the moon in that theatre. How old that makes me feel. Thank you for posting the picture.
Hello San, thanks for the name of the satelite site, I might try that tonight.

Hi Scot, I remember your Mum and grandmother and my children are about your age. The old pool at the end of the airstrip was an old army pool I think and the school before coronation school used to have our school sports day swimming there. The Taylor`s, Batzes ,the Woods, Echoeffs, Griffiths and many others. I think that it gradually slipped into the sea. The Bulae Pool was built 1970 by the P.and C assoc., My husband was the president and in cooperation with the headmaster adrian sexton they worked hard to raise the money and have the pool built. later we added dressing sheds and fence. it was open on weekends for P &C members and the 6th graders used to sell iceblocks to the swimmers raise money for the school equipment. The aim of the pool was to have everybody able to swim. Swimming lessons were taught to the pupils by groups of mothers. Regards Barbara and Lawrie Kelly

Yeah the mini pool in the Botanical Garden. I remember that. I remember when we were playing in that pool when we were still kids. A very happy moment.

Hi Webby

My family was in Lae from 1970 - 1974 so a lot of your pics are very familiar. I was back in Lae in around 1994 and not the same place.

The pool at the end of the airstrip was still there in the early 70s but not in use. It had not been filled in though and I remember drinking there after parties in 72.

Can anyone supply any more details about this swimming pool?
The pool was out of use in the early 70's but still not had been filled in, I recall being at a party close by in 1972. It was on the right hand side off the strip looking out to sea, close to the water by the pic. Google Maps might identify where it is if it has not been built over.
