Kokoda Trekking on Facebook

Kokoda Trekking

The Kokoda Trail
is one of the world's great treks, linking the southern and northern coast of Papua New Guinea, it is a challenge to be enjoyed by the fit bushwalker.

The Kokoda Trail and Sogeri area have a history of bitter fighting between Australian and Japanese armies during the early days of the war in the Pacific in World War II.

The 96 km Kokoda trail passes through rugged mountainous country of rainforest, jungles of fern, orchids, birds and clean mountain streams which tumble into steep valleys.

The unspoilt villages throughout the Kokoda Track will welcome you and the Koiari and Orokaiva people will greet you with smiles and tempt you with seasonal fruit and vegetables.

Tribute To The Late Robert (Bob) McDonald - 1936 TO 2009

PNG In memory of Bob McDonald who passed away in 2009. Bob's father was PJ McDonald from the area commonly referred to as 'McDonald's Corner' situated on the outskirts of Sogeri on the road that leads to Owers' Corner. Bob was passionate about the Kokoda Trail and also about PNG as he spent 41 years living here. Bob's dad PJ took that famous photo (with box brownie) of Capt'n Sam Templeton and his Company marching out from MacDonalds corner towards Kokoda. During the last few years of his life, Bob McDonald put together several items on Kokoda such as an Album and also a Kokoda Diary. He walked the track in December 2002 and again with Curtain Bros in 2007. RIP Bob.

PNG TPA Garamut Newsletter Issue 01 - January 2010

PNG INDUSTRY NEWS Increased international visotr arrivals in 2009. Total international arrivals to Papua New Guinea were recorded at 125,891 visitors in 2009. This was a slight increase of 4.8 percent compared to the 120,139 visitor arrivals in 2008. The highest growth was experienced from the employment, education and VFR sectors, while business and holiday arrivals decreased by 0.7% and 12% respectively. The low growth in the business and holiday segments was as a result of the global financial crisis which greatly affected global tourism. There was also the presence of swine flu threat amongst our key source markets including Japan, USA and Europe. PNG was also greatly affected by the plane crash in Kokoda which saw trekking numbers decrease dramatically by more than 30 percent.

Health and Recreational Park

PNG Joint Project between Pacific Adventist University and PNG Gardener.

For quite some time I have been driving up to Sogeri to drop off trekkers at Owers' Corner and each time have noticed the various work being undertaken to create a park for the people of Port Moresby to enjoy outside the entrance to the Pacific Adventist University. Its now almost completed and today noticed they are putting in the final stages before opening it to the general public. On the parkland there is a pond with running water; a bridge linking the areas; and small shaded areas for people to sit. On the adjoining property it appears that PNG Gardener will be opening for business as already a nursery has been established. Reindeer and goats are already on the property and it is believed fish ponds will soon be introduced. Well done to Justin and whoever else is involved in this project.

Introducing Erden Eruc - www.around-n-over.org

PNG Erden Eruç, A former Software Developer, Project Manager and Mechanical Engineer by training, Erden found the confines of the corporate work environment and the cubicle life too binding to take over as his life's work. Using his mind AND his body has now become the way for him to have a greater impact in the world. The name "Around-n-Over" first germinated in Erden's mind while daydreaming in his cubicle about a human powered circumnavigation of the world. The route would have taken him over the top of Everest: up one side then down the other... At the moment Erden is in PNG having been in a rowing boat on the Pacific Ocean for over 300 days to reach our shores. From Finschhafen to Oro Bay he set off to try and reach Australia. Erden can only row; bicycle or walk to get to the six summits he has set his goals on climbing. Having kayaked his way to Oro Bay he is now walking the Kokoda Track. After he walks to the Royal Papua Yacht Club his next journey will be to row to Thursday Island. He has already reached the summit of Mt. McKinley in Alaska in this manner (Stage 1). The next summit is Kosciuszko in Australia (Stage 2).

The land of adventure.

Arguably one of the most spectacularly beautiful countries on earth PNG is situated to the near north of Australia and comprises the eastern half of the world’s largest island. Within is geographical boundaries lay several hundred offshore islands large and small, some with unique flora, fauna and many diverse primitive village cultures. Separated from The Indonesian state of West Papua, along the 141st meridian this young nation stretches into the Pacific Ocean and is bordered by the Coral Sea in the South and Micronesia to the North. Contained entirely within the hot tropics and surrounded by oceans, heavy rainfall and high temperatures throughout the year have combined to create one of the largest rainforest areas outside of the Amazon. Geologically it is relatively young and is undergoing continuous change as the earths movement and the many active volcanos sculpt the terrain with powerful tremors, ash and lava all along an east west, line of instability forming part of the “ring of fire” that reaches from Asia right across the Pacific Ocean.

The biological diversity of the flora and fauna that is encountered as one travels from the coastal regions across lowland flood plains of swamp, open grass and into the forested slopes and mountains offer visitors a seemingly unending variety of scenery. All the recognised species of “Birds of Paradise” are represented here and over ….other species of birdlife combined with the unique marsupial, mammal, insect and marine life combine to make PNG a very special place in the world of nature. With over seven hundred distinct languages spoken throughout the nation the human cultural aspects are without parallel in anthropological terms. From the earliest contact with the western world during the second half of the 19th Century many hundreds of studies have produced a diverse range literature on the people of this land as they journeyed through time from their primitive beginnings to the present day where the nation now takes it’s place in the 21st Century as a member of the world community.

With so much diversity of culture, scenery, flora and fauna it is little wonder that PNG offers the world so much as a travel destination. Tropical Beachside Hotels, cultural performances, spectacular scenery, Mountain Treks, Fishing, unequalled Scuba Diving, Bird Watching, World War 2 Historical sites and relics such as boats and aircraft (Balus), including the infamous Kokoda Trail where local tour companies provide guides for the adventurous trekker. From the bottom of it’s oceans to the highest mountain peaks it is all here. Although it is resource rich in terms of Gold, Copper, Oil, Gas and Timber, PNG is still a developing country and the majority of it’s population are subsistence farmers of one kind or another but their shyness, generosity, humour, and good nature leaves most visitors with glowing tales of their stay in this wonderful place with it’s warm and friendly people and rich cultures. Kina is the local currency used in PNG and anyone travelling to the country should obtain some kina prior to travelling to PNG to be on the safe side. Eco-tourism or Eco-travel is a growing industry in PNG, with a number of tour operators operating this exciting form of travel to the adventurous traveller. We hope that this site which include information regarding travel, tourism, employment, surfing, taxes, Airlines Of PNG, Air Niugini, mining, forum along with thousands of pictures of PNG is of benefit to you when taking a vacation to PNG.
