The land of adventure.

Arguably one of the most spectacularly beautiful countries on earth PNG is situated to the near north of Australia and comprises the eastern half of the world’s largest island. Within is geographical boundaries lay several hundred offshore islands large and small, some with unique flora, fauna and many diverse primitive village cultures. Separated from The Indonesian state of West Papua, along the 141st meridian this young nation stretches into the Pacific Ocean and is bordered by the Coral Sea in the South and Micronesia to the North. Contained entirely within the hot tropics and surrounded by oceans, heavy rainfall and high temperatures throughout the year have combined to create one of the largest rainforest areas outside of the Amazon. Geologically it is relatively young and is undergoing continuous change as the earths movement and the many active volcanos sculpt the terrain with powerful tremors, ash and lava all along an east west, line of instability forming part of the “ring of fire” that reaches from Asia right across the Pacific Ocean.

The biological diversity of the flora and fauna that is encountered as one travels from the coastal regions across lowland flood plains of swamp, open grass and into the forested slopes and mountains offer visitors a seemingly unending variety of scenery. All the recognised species of “Birds of Paradise” are represented here and over ….other species of birdlife combined with the unique marsupial, mammal, insect and marine life combine to make PNG a very special place in the world of nature. With over seven hundred distinct languages spoken throughout the nation the human cultural aspects are without parallel in anthropological terms. From the earliest contact with the western world during the second half of the 19th Century many hundreds of studies have produced a diverse range literature on the people of this land as they journeyed through time from their primitive beginnings to the present day where the nation now takes it’s place in the 21st Century as a member of the world community.

With so much diversity of culture, scenery, flora and fauna it is little wonder that PNG offers the world so much as a travel destination. Tropical Beachside Hotels, cultural performances, spectacular scenery, Mountain Treks, Fishing, unequalled Scuba Diving, Bird Watching, World War 2 Historical sites and relics such as boats and aircraft (Balus), including the infamous Kokoda Trail where local tour companies provide guides for the adventurous trekker. From the bottom of it’s oceans to the highest mountain peaks it is all here. Although it is resource rich in terms of Gold, Copper, Oil, Gas and Timber, PNG is still a developing country and the majority of it’s population are subsistence farmers of one kind or another but their shyness, generosity, humour, and good nature leaves most visitors with glowing tales of their stay in this wonderful place with it’s warm and friendly people and rich cultures. Kina is the local currency used in PNG and anyone travelling to the country should obtain some kina prior to travelling to PNG to be on the safe side. Eco-tourism or Eco-travel is a growing industry in PNG, with a number of tour operators operating this exciting form of travel to the adventurous traveller. We hope that this site which include information regarding travel, tourism, employment, surfing, taxes, Airlines Of PNG, Air Niugini, mining, forum along with thousands of pictures of PNG is of benefit to you when taking a vacation or holiday to PNG.

KOKODA journey to put a soldier's spirit to rest in Frank's honour!

PNG Neither Black Nor White ….. But ‘khaki’ - Private Frank Richard ARCHIBALD was born at Walcha, New South Wales on February 17th, 1915 to Frank and Sarah Archibald. One of 12 children; he would find himself fighting alongside his fellow Australians in many faraway places. However, law of the time said that he was not a citizen of Australia. To the broader population back home, he was a black man in a white man’s army. But to his mates on the front, he was neither black – nor white ….. he was ‘khaki’ like the rest of them. And Frank, like many other indigenous Australians would prove his worth on the battlefield and shed his life’s blood in service of his country. The Archibald family today are well known in the Armidale area. They are direct descendants of Robert King, or King Bobby, a renowned Aboriginal leader at the time of colonisation. Frank Richard Archibald lived in the Armidale-Walcha area until 1935 when the family moved to Burnt Bridge Mission, near Kempsey. The family moved to the Mission after welfare authorities threatened to remove their children. The government authorities promised that, if the family moved to the Mission, their children would not be taken.

Flooded Girua River, Oro Province-Politicians, AUSAID, ANYONE, PLEASE DO SOMETHING!

PNG GATEWAY TO KOKODA - ITS A DISGRACE - Late 2007, a cyclone hit the Oro Province of Papua New Guinea and to this day several bridges connecting other towns and villages to the main town of Popondetta have not been restored. HELP, enough is enough. Its now January 2012 and I am asking, NO, BEGGING someone to take charge and do something to help this province. I ask the question, WHY, has it taken so LONG? Why do the thousands of villages have to put up with the lack of services. Has any money been allocated to fix the roads and bridges? Is there any HOPE in 2012 for new bridges. Lets take Kokoda for example. To drive down to Popondetta there are several rivers to be crossed! Owners of PMV's are getting tired of fixing their trucks. Hire car companies are putting up their rates. I ask you yet again, WHEN IS SOMETHING GOING TO BE DONE. Now the bridge from the main centre of town to the Popondetta Girua airport is non existent and our hire car this week along with Air Niugini's troopcarrier got stuck crossing the river to get passengers to the airport. Come on SOMEONE, its time to fix this problem once and for all not just with a bandaid that comes unstuck!!!!

Paul Menzel - Paul's Coffee Shop - End of an era in Lae

PNG THE sad news that longtime Lae resident, Paul Menzel, had passed away brought back many fond memories of the old Lae that we grew up in and came to love. Born in East Germany on Oct 10, 1936, he passed away in his beloved adopted home of Lae on Nov 15, 2011, and was buried at the Hengali village cemetery in Lae on Wednesday this week. He ran the famous Paul’s Coffee Shop, or the Terrace Coffee Lounge, at the old IPI Building along Second Street in Lae, which was legendary for its chicken soup, toasted sandwiches and coffee.

May he RIP. I am sure those of us who knew him, have never forgotten his flamboyant character that made him simply Paul. If you wish to post a tribute to Paul, PLEASE CLICK HERE:

Hiri Moale Festival

PNG Port Moresby: The Hiri Moale Festival takes place annually at Ela Beach in Port Moresby coinciding with the country’s Independence Day celebrations. This year it was held from September 16th to September 18th. The Festival is a celebration of the unique culture of the Motuan people of the Papuan region and the renewal of the ocean voyages of the ancient days. In ancient days the Motu Koitabu people used to travel west in lagatois (large, multi-hulled sailing canoes) in order to trade with the people of Kerema.

Happy Independence Day - Papua New Guinea History

PNG History

Archaeological evidence suggests human settlement on the island dates back at least 60,000 years. Migration probably occurred by sea from South East Asia during an ice age when sea levels were lower and distances between islands shorter.
1526-27 Don Jorge de Meneses credited with naming the principal island "Papua" - a Malay word meaning frizzy hair
1545 Yngio Ortis de Retez (a Spaniard) coins the term "New Guinea" because of a presumed resemblance to inhabitants of the African Guinea coast
1884 Germany takes formal possession of the northeast quarter and adjacent islands (including Bougainville)
1884 British protectorate - British New Guinea - proclaimed over the southern coast (the area now called Papua) and adjacent islands
1888 British New Guinea annexed by Britain on 4 September
1899 German imperial government assumes direct control of the northern territory, naming it German New Guinea
1902 British New Guinea placed under the authority of the Commonwealth of Australia
1905 Passage of Papua Act in the Australian parliament - British New Guinea now known as Territory of Papua
1906 Commencement of formal Australian administration of the Territory of Papua
1914 Australian troops occupy German New Guinea, which remains under Australian military control until 1921
1920 British Government, on behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia, assumes a mandate from the League of Nations to govern the Territory of New Guinea
December 1941 Japanese invasion brings suspension of Australian civil administration of the Territory of Papua
1941-45 Allied military administration of the Territory of Papua
1945 Japanese surrender restores to Australia civil administration of Papua, as well as New Guinea, under Papua New Guinea Provisional Administration Act, 1945-46
Post-war developments

In 1949, the Papua and New Guinea Act confirmed the administrative union of New Guinea and Papua under the title of 'The Territory of Papua and New Guinea' and placed it under the international trusteeship system. The Act provided for a Legislative Council (established in 1951), a judicial organisation, a public service, and a system of local government. The first House of Assembly, which replaced the Legislative Council in 1963, opened on 8 June 1964. In 1972, the name of the territory was changed to Papua New Guinea and elections saw the formation of a ministry headed by Chief Minister Michael Somare, who pledged to lead the country to self-government and then to independence. Independence from Australia was proclaimed in 1975, and Somare became the first Prime Minister of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea.

Kokoda Wallaby - written by Andrew James on the life of Stan Bisset

PNG The first full biography of the rugby legend and World War II hero- Published: August 2011 - Stan Bisset was a real hero, both in battle, on the rugby pitch and in desperate armed combat against the Japanese during the Second World War. As a member of the ill-fated 1939 Wallaby touring team to England, he was a rugby legend. In the Middle East and on the Kokoda Track, he was one of Australia's most distinguished and heroic combatants. But above all else, he personified so many attributes of the Australian soldier: moral and physical courage, compassion, selflessness, independence, loyalty, resourcefulness, devotion and humour.
